Here at Jung Do Martial Arts Academy, as a coach and mentor to many children, I often hear parents express concerns about their child's shyness. They'll say things like, "He's shy" or "She's always been the quiet one." As a parent myself and someone deeply invested in the growth and development of children, I've taken a closer look at this notion of shyness and how we, as parents and mentors, can best support our children in navigating it.

The question I've begun to ask is this: Is shyness who we are, or simply what we feel? It's an important distinction to make because how we perceive and address shyness can have a significant impact on our children's self-esteem and social development.

Understanding Shyness as a Feeling, Not a Label

First and foremost, it's crucial to recognize that shyness is a feeling—a temporary state of discomfort or hesitation in social situations. It's not a fixed identity or personality trait. By reframing shyness in this way, we can empower our children to see it as something they can overcome with practice and support.

Tips for Parents: Helping Your Child Overcome Shyness:

Validate Their Feelings: Start by acknowledging and validating your child's feelings of shyness. Let them know that it's okay to feel nervous or hesitant in certain situations. By normalizing their experience, you create a safe space for them to express themselves.

Encourage Small Steps: Encourage your child to take small steps outside of their comfort zone. This could involve initiating conversations with classmates, participating in group activities, or trying new hobbies. Celebrate their efforts and progress, no matter how small.

Lead by Example: Children often learn by observing and mimicking the behavior of adults. Model confidence and assertiveness in your own interactions, and demonstrate how to navigate social situations with ease. Encourage open communication and provide guidance when needed.

Practice Social Skills: Role-play social scenarios with your child to help them develop essential social skills such as making eye contact, initiating conversations, and active listening. Provide constructive feedback and praise their efforts.
